PHOENIX -- He's accused of killing a family of four and their two dogs before turning the gun on himself. Now, the former wife of that suspect is speaking out about what she thinks prompted the weekend slaughter.
It happened Saturday at a townhome complex near 17th Avenue and Hazelwood.
Witnesses reported seeing a man running around the complex randomly shooting at people. The suspect has since been identified as 56-year-old Michael Dante Guzzo.
The victims have been identified as 66-year-old Bruce Moore, 42-year-old Michael Moore, 36-year-old Renee Moore and 17-year-old Shannon Moore. The family's two dogs were also shot and killed.
Guzzo's ex-wife, Janet, didn't want to show her face on camera, but she did speak Monday to 3TV about her former husband. She describes Guzzo as an isolated and angry man, and calls him an accident waiting to happen.
"Mental health issues that weren't addressed," she says. "No self-esteem, rage and anger. Anger at his family that he couldn't let go of.
"I had often told Mike, 'Your anger's going to kill you. Your anger's going to be the death of you,'" she continued.
Residents of the complex are deeply shaken.
"I mean, he had to be mentally ill or something," one neighbor says. "I mean, who would do that? Just kind of go out and start shooting? Especially to kill an entire family. That's really sad."
Some speculate anger over a barking dog provoked Guzzo's rampage. But the shooter's ex-wife believes his actions were due to unresolved mental health issues.
"There's no answer to this," Janet says. "It's just too hard to lose four of a family and go, oh, I don't care if he was beaten by his father. I know that. But that was the crap he carried with him."
Janet says she's not surprised that Guzzo, a pharmacist, turned the gun on himself after shooting the others.
"I'm not surprised he took his own life," she says. "I always felt he would."
Grief counselors have been called in to the complex to help residents deal with the shock and grief. A makeshift memorial has also been set up outside the family's townhome.
