GILBERT, Ariz. -- Police have arrested a man who allegedly broke into two Gilbert homes early Monday morning.

It happened near Cooper and Guadalupe roads.

Police found Justin Lee Durbin, 26, inside a home in the area. He was in an upstairs laundry room. They believe he got into the house through a small dog door.

Homeowner Casey Roskwitalski said he noticed his cigarettes and wallet were missing when he went downstairs. Seeing several patrol cars outside, he called the police.

"Police officers asked if they could check the house," Roskwitalski told 3TV's Javier Soto. "They walked in and he was literally in the laundry room, next to my bedroom -- like 2 feet away."

The suspect reportedly was trying to hide in a fabric hamper.

Investigators believe Durbin also tried to burglarize another house a few blocks away. He fled when that homeowner pulled out a shotgun. Police believe the suspect also tried to break into several cars.

"He definitely looked like a drug addict," Roskwitalski's roommate said. "Definitely a meth-head. Skinny. Very skinny. And just, you know, raggedy."

No injuries were reported.
