PHOENIX -- The Sunnyslope area is getting a much-needed economic boost with a brand new Walmart.
The new store opened Wednesday morning near Central and Dunlap, at 115 E. Dunlap Ave. in a former Food City store.
It's a "Walmart Neighborhood Market," which is smaller than the typical super-sized Walmart. The Walmart Neighborhood Market stores are usually about 38,000 square feet and employ no more than 100 people, while typical Walmart stores are about 106,000 square feet and employ about 200 people. The Walmart Supercenters are about 182,000 square feet and employ about 300 people.
"This spot was vacant for four years, so just for the opportunity for Walmart to get in was awesome," says store manager T.J. Arthur. "The day is finally here, and we're absolutely ecstatic to open those doors and have people come in."
Crowds gathered at the new store this morning to grab some free food, try some samples and take part in giveaways.
The store will be open 24 hours, a nice perk for those at John C. Lincoln Hospital across the street. "With the hospital, we want to make sure that everybody has their needs taken care of," says Arthur. "So being open 24 hours was kind of a no-brainer."
The store also created jobs. 95 positions are being filled at the new location.
