PHOENIX – Police need your help to find the person who shot and killed a young man who was in a car with two friends Wednesday night.
It happened at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 77th Avenue and Osborn Road.
According to Officer James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department, the 18-year-old was with his friends, ages 19 and 20, in a 1992 white Honda. They were heading east on Osborn Road in the Maryvale neighborhood when somebody fired shots at the car.
The 18-year-old was hit. His friends took him to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. Police have not released the victim’s name.
Neither one of the friends was injured. Police say both are cooperating fully with investigators, although they told detectives that they only heard the gunfire and did not see anything.
In a canvas of homes in the neighborhood, officers did not come across any potential witnesses.
Detectives have not determined exactly where the shooter was when he or she opened fire. It’s also not clear whether the vehicle might have been targeted or if this was a random incident.
Investigators spent hours scouring the scene for evidence, but despite that, they have no solid leads. They wrapped up the on-scene portion of their investigation shortly before 7:30 a.m., nine hours after the shooting.
Investigators are asking anyone who might have seen anything to call the Phoenix Police Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
