PHOENIX – One suspect was fatally shot and another is still on the loose following an attempted robbery of an armored truck at a Phoenix bank Friday morning.
According to police, two armored truck employees were transferring money at a Wells Fargo Bank ATM near Glendale Avenue and Seventh Street when two men approached and demanded money.
"Two black male suspects approached them to try to rob them," said Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Department. "One of the employees engaged those suspects and shot one of the suspects."
That suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later was pronounced dead.
Neither of the Garda employees was injured.
Phoenix police set up a perimeter from Seventh Street to 12th Street and from Glendale to Maryland avenues as they searched for the second suspect, but he got away.
"He was a little skittish," said witness Eric Campbell. "He comes around the corner and he tries to get in this car and then he throws his gun down and takes off down the alley."
That suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, wearing baggy pants, a gray shirt and a baseball cap.
