Map: US 60 and Power Road
MESA, Ariz. -- One person was killed in a pair of separate but related crashes on US 60 in Mesa Tuesday morning.
It happened in the westbound lanes near Power Road.
It started at about 5 a.m. when a vehicle stalled in the far right lane of US was hit by another vehicle.
"The events leading to the second collision, which involved a fatality, began when a garbage truck stopped behind the stalled vehicle involved in the first collision," according to a Department of Public Safety news release. "Just a few minutes later, a box truck crashed into the rear of the garbage truck, killing the driver of the box truck."
That victim has been identified as Domingo Diego Mateo, 32, of Queen Creek.
The driver of the garbage truck, who has not had gotten out of his rig to call 911, so he was not in the cab when the box truck rear-ended the vehicle. He was not injured.
According to DPS, the driver and occupants of the stalled vehicle ran away and have not been seen since.
The other driver in that initial collision suffered a minor injury.
While the wrecks and subsequent investigation were blocking three lanes, traffic was crawling by the scene in the remaining lanes. In addition to the three right lanes, the Power Road on ramp to the 60 was closed, as well.
From East Valley, consider entering WB US 60 west of Power Road to avoid delays. Another idea: Use L-202 Red Mountain ... longer but clear.— Arizona DOT (@ArizonaDOT) July 23, 2013
Expect an extended closure at the Power on ramp and right lane on US 60 West because of a fatal crash. Try Higley on ramp instead.— Arizona DOT (@ArizonaDOT) July 23, 2013
The restrictions were in place for about five hours. ADOT re-opened all lanes shortly before 11 a.m.
Both crashes are under investigation.
