PHOENIX – A Phoenix man will be spending the next several years behind bars for killing his girlfriend’s daughter.
On Thursday, Martwane Mackey was sentenced to 22 years in prison for one count of second degree murder.
Mackey also received lifetime probation with domestic violence and mental health terms for each of his two counts of child abuse.
Mackey called 9-1-1 on June 25, 2011 and said that 3-year-old Tyshea Austin wasn’t breathing.
Police arrived to discover that Austin had bite marks and injuries to her head and body, and appeared to have been dead for “some time.”
Investigators also discovered that Austin’s 1-year-old sister had similar injuries.
Mackey, who was 18-years-old at the time, admitted to police that he abused the girls, but denied causing Austin’s death.
Mackey eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse this past November.
