FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A Norwegian man died Tuesday while base jumping near the Grand Canyon.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Eiliv Ruud lost his life while jumping at the Salt Trail Canyon.

When authorities arrived on scene they spoke with two individuals who said they had traveled with Ruud from Norway specifically to do base jumping in Arizona.

They said all three of them were planning to jump, but it was Ruud who first attempted the 1000 foot trek to the bottom.

The witnesses told deputies that it appeared as if Ruud had made it about halfway down when a gust of wind blew him into the canyon wall.

One of Ruud’s parachutes reportedly deployed, but didn’t function correctly.

The two witnesses said they eventually heard what they thought was the sound of Ruud hitting the canyon floor.

Rescue crews were able to confirm that Ruud had died, but due to a lack of sunlight they weren’t able to recover his body until Wednesday.

Ruud’s body has since been transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office where the investigation into the incident continues.
