UPDATE:
SAN MANUEL, Ariz. -- At least some of the eight San Manuel High School cheerleaders injured last Friday when their van crashed on the way to a football game will be on the sidelines as their team takes on Miami Friday night.
Principal John Ryan says the senior squad that was in the wreck will be replaced by the junior varsity cheerleaders. But some of the injured girls have recovered enough to attend.
The last hospitalized cheerleader was released from University Medical Center in Tucson on Thursday, a hospital spokesman said. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Cline had been in critical condition after the wreck but improved quickly.
One of three injured cheer coaches is still hospitalized, but 47-year-old Elizabeth Zazueta was in fair condition on Friday.
ORIGINAL REPORT:
TUCSON -- A southern Arizona high school cheerleader and a coach injured in a van rollover on the way to a football game have been upgraded to serious condition.
Sixteen-year-old cheerleader Tyler Cline and 47-year-old coach Elizabeth Zazueta are being treated at University Medical Center in Tucson.
They were in critical condition over the weekend, but were upgraded Monday.
Eight cheerleaders and three coaches were in the van from San Manuel High School about 10 miles west of Benson when the driver swerved to miss a dog on the highway, causing the rollover Friday.
Three cheerleaders are in fair condition while everyone else was released after treatment.
Two men in a car that had been following the van were killed when they were hit by a semi truck as they slowed to avoid the wreck.
