PHOENIX -- Fear of a massive explosion forced the evacuation of several Valley business and shut down an on and off ram along Interstate 17.
That all happened after a car backed into a pump at a gas station near 27th and Northern avenues Sunday night.
About 100 gallons of gasoline spilled into the streets and sewer drains.
Crews said they quarantined the area and were able to keep the gas from going too far.
"What we wanted to do is protect the area from any occurrence of an ignition source, whether it be a cigarette butt or a spark from a vehicle," said Capt. Courtney Jenkins of the Phoenix Fire Department.
Crews immediately closed every thing within 300 feet of the gas station.
The evacuation order remained in effect until late Sunday night.
No injuries were reported.
