8 car pileup closes SR 87 for hours

NEAR LAKE PLEASANT -- UPDATE: State Route 87 has re-opened as of 11:20am. No injuries were reported in the 8-car pileup involving a jack-knifed semi in the southbound lanes of the highway.

PREVIOUS REPORT:

The southbound lanes of State Route 87 are closed at milepost 205 for a semi-truck accident and eight- vehicle pileup.

The Department of Public Safety is on the scene, which is about 25 miles north of McDowell Road.

The highway is closed in that area. DPS said that closure will remain in place for six to eight hours. Southbound traffic heading to Phoenix is being re-routed through Globe at the junction of S.R. 87 and S.R. 188 (Beeline and Bush highways), which is about 30 miles north of the collision.

The closure is not affecting northbound traffic.

Investigators said a semi apparently jack-knifed at about 5 a.m., and several vechile piled up behind it.

No injuries have been reported.
