Teachers cheer in class under scrutiny

07:43 PM Mountain Standard Time on Monday, October 8, 2007

By Courtney Zubowski / 3TV

You don't need a megaphone for this cheer because this is the cheer that's been seen and heard around the world.

It's a cheerleading coach from Higley Unified School District showing her students some new moves.

The problem is the video ended up on 'You Tube' and the coach has since been removed from  class.

Some of her students are 'flipping out' that's it's become such a big deal.

It became a big deal when the video hit 'You Tube.'

See, one of her students recorded the routine on his cell phone and posted it on the popular website.

Now, everyone is checking it out.

It's a video from a Williams Field High School humanities class that's spreading faster than a cheerleader can do a round off back flip flop back tuck.

As of Monday afternoon, nearly 17, 000 people had watched the Williams Field High School humanities teacher and cheerleading coach show off her school spirit.

"I thought it was innocent,” 10th grader Chase Pruitt said. “I don't think she did anything wrong."

Pruitt watched it on 'You Tube.'

He also watched in class.

"She said she was nervous, she didn't want to do it, but we just asked her if we could see the new cheer for the game and she did it,” Pruitt said. “It was nice there was nothing wrong with that.”

Most of the 175 people that have commented on the posting, agree.

Posters write she doesn't deserve to be fired. Even Chase's mother who met with Coach Mallon the day before her cheer doesn't want the coach stripped of her spirit stick.

But some question why she did it.

Was it really the responsible thing to do?

"Sometimes people get caught up in the innocent which may not be so bad, but it's the end result and what is it encouraging our kids to do," another mother said.

The Higley Unified School District isn't saying much.

A spokesperson will confirm 'a' teacher is on paid administrative leave, but she won't say which teacher.

Students of Coach Mallon though say they've had substitutes for the past week or so. Will the cheerleading coach be back at the head of the class?

It's up to the district as administrators will be making the next move.

A spokesperson for the school district said the investigation will take about two weeks.

She said they should be able to provide more information when it's all over.
