Phoenix City Council bans texting while driving

03:40 PM Mountain Standard Time on Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Staff and wire reports

On Wednesday afternoon, the Phoenix City Council approved an ordinance to ban text-messaging while driving.

Phoenix is the first city in Arizona -- and among the first cities in the country -- to ban text-messaging while driving.

Under the ordinance, drivers caught texting while driving could face a $100 fine plus $84 in surcharges.

For a texting driver who causes an accident, the fine soars to $460 plus surcharges.

The move to ban texting while driving comes in the wake of a deadly accident last month in which an 18-year-old Glendale woman crossed the center line and collided with another car. Both drivers were killed. Police said the 18-year-old was texting at the time of the accident.

Five states and the District of Columbia have already made it illegal for drivers to use handheld cell phones while behind the wheel. The state of Washington has also banned text-messaging while driving.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
