It all started at about 8:30 a.m., when two officers tried to talk to a man and two women who were jaywalking in the area of 24th Street and Thomas Road.

After a background check, the officers discovered that the man was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant. The officers then tried to take him into custody.

After the shooting, the suspect reportedly ran away and carjacked a vehicle a couple of blocks from the original scene. There was a person inside the car at the time.

The situation finally came to an end in the area of 27th Avenue and McDowell Road, where officers spotted the stolen vehicle with the suspect and a hostage inside.

Officers say when they made contact with the suspect, he presented lethal force and was shot and killed.

The hostage in the car was not hurt.

The two women who were involved in the initial jaywalking incident are in custody and are being questioned by police.

The ongoing investigation into the situation had force the closure of the intersection of Interstate 17 and McDowell Road. The closure, which is expected to last several hours, includes the north and southbound off ramps from I-17 to McDowell Road.

Erfle was an eight-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. He was married with two children.
