Mother of invention
04:03 PM Mountain Standard Time on Monday, August 13, 2007
They say, "Need leads to innovation," and that was never more true than in the case of Richelle Nassos who turned her son's fears and tears into a major business.
It's first aid with a little TLC.
Part doctor bag, part playtime, it is a first-aid kit designed just for kids and all designed by a Valley mother who you could literally call the Mother of Invention.
"I came up with the idea when our oldest son Cody was then 3," said Nassos. "He's now 8 and he was always afraid of first aid. When he had an owee, he'd have a meltdown and I thought there had to be something more kid friendly that is not so scary for kids."
While he is no longer fussy about first aid, he is famous.
"I was pretty much the popular kid in my class because every time I went to lunch everyone was following me to every table," Cody said.
It's because he's on the front of the Medibag.
"We patented and designed our own doctor's bag and them we put a place to put their name on it so they can call it their own," Nassos said.
"And then when you open it up it is all compartmentalized, so we made with doors that shut down for mom," she said. "And then we did the gloves blue. We did multi-colored crayon bandages, neon bandages. did smiley face pictures, basically just fun-ified the whole thing."
Another consideration was an eye wash.
"This is one of the most costly items and it was important to us, especially as a mom, kids get stuff in their eyes so we put the eyewash in there," she said.
In all, there are 117 items in the kit, and a little something extra as well.
"There is just a lot of love and care and concern in our product," Nassos said.
That's because the kids are put together and shipped from Gompers here in Arizona.
"They are a rehabilitation center for all levels of disabilities," Nassos said. "It gives them an opportunity at all different levels of disabilities to work on our project, because there are items on our project that are a little more intense. And there are others that aren't so intense. So everyone gets to work on it," Nassos said.
The Medibags come in from a warehouse.
"And so they start here and they just put everything together from your flip charts, everything is stacked up. It shows on the wall exactly what goes in and what quantity," she said.
It makes this story not just about a first-aid kit, near as it may be, but about a family.
On almost any given day, you'll find Nassos' husband, kids and parents watching over the process or diving in and packing Medibags for shipment.
"We've been encouraged time and time again to take our process overseas, we can save money etc.," Nassos said. "You know what that is not important to us. What is important is we come in here we get to meet the people touch the people see the people doing this, putting their effort and love into our kit."
Nassos said it's very hands on.
"That's my philosophy in marriage and parenting and business," she said.
That philosophy has led to the launch of a new Medibag for pets and a smaller first-aid kit is on the way as well, proving that sometimes a good idea followed up with good intentions is the perfect medicine.
"We launched this from a little kitchen desk in our kitchen in our home, with our kids running around us. I gave birth to our second child eight months after we launched. So we were balancing a lot and to see it all come to fruition, I can't even put it into words," she said.
Medibags are available at Toys R Us and select Target stores for $19.99 or less.
