Want a free pool fence?

Valley firefighters try their best to save lives.

One way they do that is by helping families enclose their swimming pools with a free fence.

But believe it or not, they're having a hard time finding people who want one.

Patty Banuelos always keeps her 3-year-old son close by when they're watching children near the swimming pool, but that's not enough.

"About a month ago we had a little incident that happened," she said. "We had two adults back here in the yard and neither one of them were paying attention and he fell in there. He fell in the pool."

Family members pulled Anthony out right away. He was fine.

"That's when I decided, you know, that it's time to get the fence," she said.

Like many families, Banuelos is on a budge and couldn't afford a pool fence, but then she heard about a program that gives away fences to families in need.

"We have raised funds throughout the community and we can put a pool fence in their yard professionally installed by a licensed contractor at no charge to them," said Capt. Rich Bauer, a Phoenix firefighter.

"I was really happy and relieved and I was just like excited about it," Banuelos said.

Bauer is director of community programs for firefighters' charities.

"Right here in Maryvale where this fence is was the highest drowning rate in the country a few years ago and last year with the help of this program, there was zero drownings in this area," Bauer said.

He said he has enough money to give away between 70 and 80 pool fences, but there's a problem.

"Right now we are in need of people to actually apply for the fences so we're trying to get the word out," he said.

Banuelos is too.

"Whoever has a pool please just get one. It's seriously worth it just to keep everybody safe," she said.
