Four people are in custody this morning in connection with the death of a 13-year-old runaway.
Brenda Nguyen was last seen by her family on Feb. 11. Her body was found in an alley on Feb. 19.
The teen went unidentified and was known only as Jane Doe for a week.
Police were just able to identify her late last weekend.
According to Sgt. Joel Tranter of the Phoenix Police Department, officers arrested four people in connection with Brenda's death yesterday evening.
Armando Hernandez, 18, Ana Hernandez, 44, Clayton Koepke, 18, and Scott Franze, 38, have all been booked on a variety of charges.
Investigators said Armando Hernandez is the son of Ana Hernandez, and that Ana Hernandez is involved with Franze. Koepke is reportedly a family friend. Police said all four live together in an apartment.
According to police, investigators developed probable cause that led them to that west Phoenix apartment last night.
In a news conference Wednesday morning, police said while Brenda and her friend Arlene were at the suspects' apartment, Brenda began drinking alcohol. She reportedly drank so much -- as much as a fifth of vodka -- so fast that she passed out and was having trouble breathing and showing signs of seizures.
The lead investigator in the case said none of the adults in the apartment took the alcohol from her, nor did they call 911 or get her medical help even though they knew she was in distress. Investigators said there's evidence that somebody attempted to perform CPR on Brenda, but it's not clear when.
At some point, everybody in the apartment fell asleep, police said. When they woke up, Brenda was dead. That's when the suspects moved her body, taking her to the alley where she was later found on Feb. 19.
"They knew something was wrong and they decided not to say anything," said Detective Dave Barnes of the Phoenix Police Department. "They chose not to come forward."
In interviews conducted during the course of the investigation, some people have told police they believe Brenda might have survived if she had received emergecy medical care.
"The fact that these adults ... facilitated strong alcochol -- any alcochol -- to a 13-year-old is absolutely amazing," Tranter said. "In this particular case, we consider it very aggravated, and I think the charges speak to that."
All four suspects face charges of child abuse, which is a felony. Armando Hernandez and Koepke are also charged with concealing a dead body.
Barnes said investigators have seized evidence from the apartment and are continuing to work the case. He also said Arlene, who returned home very early the morning of Feb. 26, has been cooperating with police.
According to Barnes, Arlene, 14, might also face charges in connection with Brenda's death. The County Attorney's Office will make that decision.
