Interim U.S. Attorney named for Arizona

12:17 PM Mountain Standard Time on Wednesday, January 31, 2007

By The Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Today is the last day Paul Charlton will be the U.S. Attorney for Arizona.

He's leaving the post to become a partner in a Phoenix law firm.

Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl earlier this month recommended Diane Humetewa as his replacement.

Humetewa is a member of the Hopi Indian Tribe and currently is senior litigation counsel and tribal liaison for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix.

So far President Bush hasn't made a nomination, so the Justice Department announced today that Daniel Knauss will serve as the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona.

Knauss currently is the chief assistant U.S. attorney for the district.
