Business owners protest light rail

Phoenix business owners protested against the Valley's light rail project Friday.

Picketers gathered to voice concerns about the transportation project they say has cut some businesses' revenue by as much as 50 percent.

When completed, the light rail project will run from Phoenix east of Interstate 17 at Bethany Home Road to Apache Road east of the Loop 101 in Tempe.

Construction is expected to continue for at least five more weeks on the section running near 32nd and Washington streets.

That's where protesters frustrated with the city of Phoenix gathered today.

"We really want the city to work with us to make sure we all can survive the light rail process," said Mike Carroll, president of Construction Lots! "We believe that the light rail installation is going to be a really good thing for the city, but it doesn't do us any good if we're all not here when it's all installed and running."

Gary Flenoy with METRO said, "We're going to meet with them to see if we missed something and if there's something we can do a little better to direct traffic to their business and hopefully we can cover all those bases."

Business owners are mainly asking the city to provide more signs showing customers where to enter from the construction-strewn street.
