New technology helping police track shootings

05:21 PM Mountain Standard Time on Thursday, July 27, 2006

All Valley police officers are on high alert as the search for the serial killers continue.

Police in Glendale tell us that they are going through all of their cases with a fine tooth comb.

Consider this, since June 30 there have been 190 gunshot incidents in Glendale alone and with the help of what’s called a shot spotter authorities are able to keep track of this activity.

Five shots were fired and at that moment detective Sergei Droban can tell exactly where they are coming from.

The Glendale police is the only police department in Arizona to have the shot spotter technology.

Sensors are placed all over the city, which helps police get right to the scene of the crime.

At 2:30 Thursday morning police responded to shots fired near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Every shooting is serious, but with a Serial Shooter on the loose every crime scene has to be carefully examined. Getting to the scene right away, preserving evidence and talking to witnesses is crucial and with the help of the technology it makes it easier to get that information.

The shot spotter has helped Glendale police, but Detective Droban said when it comes to solving crimes it's nothing like what we see on television.

In real life, Droban said it takes time and what he calls good old fashion police work especially when you're trying to catch not one but two serial killers.
