At least 5 students poked with syringe
03:35 PM Mountain Standard Time on Friday, February 17, 2006
Some kindergartners at a Valley school were playing with a syringe they found at a bus stop. At least five children from Marley Park Elementary School in Surprise were poked by the needle. The school sent home a letter to parents that said the students had brought the needle to school on the school bus and passed it around. Administrators at the school interviewed the kids to find out what happened. They said it was a good time for parents to teach their children about what to do if they find something like a syringe on the ground. "The lesson that we're reinforcing with students and parents is when you find something like this, leave it alone," said Timothy Tait, a spokesman for the Dysart Unified School District. "Don't pick it up. Don't touch it. Don't talk about it. Report it to an adult so it can be disposed of properly and safely." The school said that if parents think their child may have had contact with the needle, the best thing to do is to take them to a doctor to get checked out.
