Accused of skipping jury duty? Don't be fooled

05:45 PM Mountain Standard Time on Friday, July 29, 2005

By Gary Harper / 3TV reporter

Another scam is looking to hook consumers, and if you're not aware of it, the Arizona attorney general said you just may fall for it.

Culprits are coming up with some incredible, ingenious ways to steal your personal information.

The latest scam involves jury duty.

First of all, you get a phone call from someone claiming to be with Superior Court, asking why you haven't shown up for jury duty.

When you say you never received a notice, the suspects ask you for your date of birth and social security number so they can check your files.

"And as soon as you say, 'I'm not going to give you my social security number because I don't know who you are,' then the caller says, "Well, we also represent the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and we will issue a warrant for your arrest,'" Goddard said.

If you get a phone call like this, Goddard is advising not to give out any personal information.

The best thing to do is just hang up.

The court does not contact you by phone concerning jury duty. They use the mail.
