MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested several illegal immigrants this week following a traffic stop on State Route 87.
On Wednesday, deputies reportedly saw a GMC truck with a camper shell traveling at a high rate of speed and ordered the vehicle to pull over.
After the truck came to a stop, eight men exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Three of the men were quickly apprehended.
Deputies conducted a second search of the truck and found 15 more illegal immigrants inside.
According to the MCSO, all 18 of the men apprehended admitted to paying as much as $8,000 to be smuggled into the United States.
The men were from Mexico and Guatemala, and heading for Florida, California, Washington and Georgia.
One of the 18 people arrested was a 15-year-old juvenile who was turned over Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The other 17 people were booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on human smuggling charges.
There’s no word on what happened to the other five individuals who fled the truck following the traffic stop.
