PHOENIX -- A group of boy scouts are being monitored by authorities after failing to return from a hiking trip on time.

The group was slated to return from the Four Peaks area northeast of the Valley on Saturday, but when they didn’t show up a concerned parent called the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found the group’s two vehicles Saturday night at the lone pine saddle trailhead, and early Sunday morning MCSO launched a chopper.

MCSO located the group in an area that was too remote to land the helicopter. The group signaled to MCSO that they were doing okay, and they were left to camp.

MCSO has been monitoring the group ever since, and on Sunday afternoon they sent a hiking team out to make sure they had enough food and water to make it out safely.

At last check the group, which includes two adults and six 12 to 13 year olds, was 10 to 15 miles into the mountains.

There’s no word on what MCSO plans to do once darkness sets in.
