PHOENIX (AP) — The father of a woman misidentified in a fatal Arizona car accident says the hospital confused the families, not the victims.
Frank Cantu says the hospital was given information to indicate the surviving patient of the July 18 crash was 19-year-old Abby Guerra and not his 21-year-old daughter, Marlena Cantu.
But he says someone with the hospital came to him instead and said the patient was his daughter. He says Guerra was then assumed to be the victim killed at the scene.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said Monday they used information from family members about any distinguishing marks on the women to make the identification.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office says that during the post-mortem exam five days after the crash, it was determined the dead woman was Cantu and not Guerra.
