PHOENIX (AP) — One Phoenix police officer is dead and another is in critical condition after a shootout that killed a man wanted on a felony warrant.
Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia announced that one of the officers in the fugitive apprehension team died a few hours after the Monday afternoon shooting.
His name wasn't immediately released but Garcia says the man was a 21-year veteran.
The other officer is a nine-year veteran. Garcia says that officer is fighting for his life.
The shootout occurred after the suspect fled in his car, caused a three-vehicle collision, and ran away on foot before exchanging gunfire with officers outside a check cashing and title loan business.
Police say the suspect came around the corner with a gun and a third officer fatally shot the suspect.
