TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A federal judge is Tucson is refusing to allow former Arizona Rep. Rick Renzi remain free on bail while he appeals his convictions on public corruption, money laundering and other charges.
U.S. District Judge David Bury on Tuesday rejected the bail request from Renzi and his co-defendant, saying they haven't raised a substantial question of law or fact likely to result in a reversal of their convictions or a new trial.
Renzi and co-defendant James Sandlin must report to prison by Jan. 13. Renzi was sentenced to serve three years and Sandlin 18 months.
Renzi was accused of using his office for personal financial gain and looting a family insurance business to help fund his 2002 campaign.
He represented Arizona's 1st Congressional District from early 2003 until early 2009.
