PHOENIX (AP) — Federal authorities say another Guatemalan resident being held at the Eloy Detention Center has died from an apparent suicide.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials announced Thursday that 40-year-old Jorge Garcia-Mejia was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday afternoon by staff conducting security checks.
Detention facility personnel immediately called 911, but emergency medical technicians were unable to revive him.
Authorities say Garcia-Mejia was being investigated by Phoenix police for suspected sexual conduct with a minor.
He was arrested for assault at the Maricopa County Jail and had been detained at the Eloy center since March 23 awaiting immigration hearings.
ICE officials say a 24-year-old Guatemalan woman in custody at the Eloy Detention Center died from an apparent suicide Sunday after she was found hanging in her cell by another detainee.
