TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A rare snowstorm in the Tucson area suspended first-round play at southern Arizona's premier golf event, while rain and snow battered other parts of the state.

Rain and then snow flurries moved into Marana at about 11 a.m., halting play at the Match Play Championship for the day.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning in effect until late Wednesday for the Tucson area, with blizzard conditions possible in mountain areas.

Meteorologists say up to 3 inches of snow could fall in the Tucson metropolitan area.

Meanwhile, Flagstaff public schools and Northern Arizona University were closed due to a winter storm that was dropping snow in Arizona's higher elevations and rain elsewhere.

The Phoenix metro area had up to three-quarters of an inch of rain in some parts Wednesday.
