PHOENIX (AP) — Twenty members of a Phoenix-based incident management team are on their way to New York City to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The team, made up of fire and police officials, left Monday morning. They will help coordinate the use of generators, dump trucks, forklifts and other equipment.
The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/Sh0NWQ) that the team will be in New York for two weeks.
Phoenix officials announced the team's assignment during a news conference at Sky Harbor International Airport. Mayor Greg Stanton says New York specifically asked for the Phoenix team.
The storm heavily damaged parts of New York City and Long Island, where tens of thousands of people remain without power. Nearly two dozen schools and two city-owned hospitals remain closed, and gasoline continues to be rationed.
