FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Northern Arizona authorities say burned human remains have been found inside a charred vehicle in a remote area of Coconino County.
County sheriff's officials say the vehicle was discovered by ranchers herding livestock Friday about five miles south of Interstate 40 and east of the town of Ash Fork.
Sheriff's investigators say the remains may be the body of the registered owner of the vehicle, who was reported missing to Mesa police earlier this month.
But they say positive identification hasn't been made yet due to the body's burned condition.
Sheriff's detectives are working with Flagstaff Fire Department arson investigators and the county Medical Examiner's Office to identify the body and determine the cause of death.
