Woman killed in motorcycle-bike wreck identified

MESA -- Police say no charges are likely in the case of an early morning motorcycle-bike wreck that killed a 68-year-old deaf woman Wednesday.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. at 24th Street and Broadway Road in Mesa.

Police have identified the woman as Melva Millensifer.

According to investigators, Millensifer was riding her bike across the street against the red light when she was hit by a 22-year-old motorcycle rider who was on his way to school.

Mesa Police say it was very dark at the time of the wreck, and Millensifer could not hear the motorcycle coming.

Joe Pico, the motorcycle rider's grandfather, said the 22-year-old tried to avoid Millensifer, but was unable to do so.

Millensifer was taken to the hospital, but her injuries were too severe. She died a short time later.

The motorcyclist went down a little ways from Millensifer, hitting his head. He was taken to the hospital, but is expected to recover. Pico said his grandson was more concerned about Millensifer.

At this point, police do no think impairment was an issue in the wreck.

"There will be no criminal charges," said an officer on the scene. "There was no drug impairment or alcohol impairment in this case."
