SELIGMAN – Two men were taken into custody after a traffic stop revealed a couple of safes and a large amount of marijuana.

A Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office K9 deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black Chevy Blazer on Tuesday at about 11 a.m. on Interstate 40 west of Seligman.

While talking to the two occupants of the vehicle the deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

The driver, 26-year-old Daniel Burkett, produced a New Mexico identification card and later acknowledged he had a “bag” of pot in the car. The passenger, 19-year-old Thomas Thompson, is also a resident of New Mexico.

K9 “Elliot” sniffed the SUV and alerted to a spot where the deputy discovered baggies of pot and a digital scale.

Two portable safes were also found in the back seat area. The smallest one was empty but the second one contained more than three pounds of marijuana.

Thompson reportedly admitted that he and Burkett had gone to California to purchase the drugs and were driving to Albuquerque, New Mexico to deliver the load.

Both men face charges of transportation of marijuana for sale and are in custody at the Camp Verde Detention Center.
