TUCSON -- Tucson police say a boy left alone at home has died after a gun went off.

Tucson police spokesman Sgt. Fabian Pacheco said 10-year-old Anthony J. Wells was handling a handgun belonging to his stepfather on Tuesday night when it went off inside a residence in the 900 block of North Columbus Boulevard.

Detectives learned that Anthony's parents had gone out to pick up dinner for the family and left him at home.

The parents returned minutes later and discovered their son had shot himself. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continues.

Anthony was a fourth-grader at Peter Howell Elementary School.
