BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- A pickup truck ended up in a Buckeye canal Thursday morning after the driver said he was cut off by two cars that were racing each other.
John Hoffpauir said he was heading down Jackrabbit Trail when two cars started following closely behind his truck.
"They were right on my bumper," Hoffpauir said.
Hoffpauir said he slowed down, but the other drivers wouldn't back off so he continued driving at his previous speed. The cars then went around him and cut in front of his truck, causing him to swerve.
"I lost control of it," he said. "I didn't even have time to hit my brakes."
Hoffpauir jumped out of his truck before it went into the canal near Jackrabbit Trail and Southern Avenue. He hit the dirt and ended up sliding into the water but was able to crawl out.
The two cars left the scene. Hoffpauir didn't have any information on the drivers.
Hoffpauir said he was shaken up and sore but uninjured. He said his truck is probably a total loss.
The truck was hoisted from the canal and towed away.
