TEMPE, Ariz. - Tempe police are investigating a shooting death near Arizona State University.

According to police, Zachary Marco, 21, was shot in an apparent robbery at approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Rural Road and University Drive.

Marco was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead a short while later. Marco was a student at ASU.

"These persons stole somebody that the world really could've used," said Daniel Marco, Zachary's father. "There's 80,000 students at Arizona State University walking around, each of them trying to achieve something and working to achieve it and these punks are out there taking it."

Police are following up on information from the scene regarding two black males who may have been involved in the incident but fled before officers arrived on scene.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Police said the motive was robbery.

Marco was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, a page at the state Legislature and is an organ donor. He reportedly had plans to attend law school.

Tempe police are asking anyone with any information on the shooting to contact the police department at 480-350-8311 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
