TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police made nearly 200 arrests during their "Back to School" alcohol crackdown.

Tempe police and the Arizona State University Police Department targeted 13 apartment complexes near campus.

Tempe and ASU police deployed uniformed and plain clothes officers at each of the complexes specifically to conduct liquor enforcement on three consecutive Fridays and Saturdays beginning Aug. 20 and ending Sept. 4.

The six-night campaign resulted in 185 arrests, 163 of which were alcohol related.

According to the Tempe Police Department, crimes such as robberies, assaults and public disorder typically increase during this time of year and are often linked to alcohol abuse.

"Our goal is to set the tone early," said North Patrol Cmdr. David Humble. "We want our residents, students and visitors to know what is expected of them. We have seen firsthand how being proactive has a positive impact on crimes associated with illegal alcohol consumption and parties.
