PHOENIX -- The family of a young murder victim and Phoenix police are turning to the public for help finding a killer.

By all accounts, Jose Ruiz, 18, had an extremely bright future. Over the weekend, however, that future was violently taken away.

Ruiz was shot and killed Saturday night while working at the Boost Mobile store on 51st Avenue just south of Southern Avenue, one of the young man's two jobs.

"Jose was the best brother you could have," a clearly emotional Andres Ruiz, 12, said during a news conference Tuesday.

He and the rest of Ruiz's family are begging for information about the shooting death of their brother and son.

"It really touches our heart," Garcia said, promising his detectives will do everything they can to bring Ruiz's killer to justice. "We want to bring some closure to his family."

A woman who had gone into the Boost Mobile store Saturday night called 911, puzzled that there did not seem to be any employees in the open store. Police found Ruiz's body behind the counter. He had been shot to death.

"Based upon his location behind the counter [he] was most likely trying to get to a panic button, an alarm button, that they have behind the counter when he was shot to death," said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department that night.

Ruiz graduated from Alhambra High School in May. He was working two jobs as he planned for college. His family said he wanted to be a police officer.

"That someone would do this to him is just absolutely unthinkable," Crump continued. "It should enrage all of us in the community."

Because the store does not have security camera, investigators do know what happened in the moments before the shooting.

At this point, police do not have any suspects in Ruiz's murder, but they believe somebody out there might have the information they need.

If you know anything about what happened at the Boost Mobile store Saturday night, please call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377), 1-800-343-TIPS (8477) or 480-TESTIGO (837-8446).

The account set up by the family to help with funeral costs for Ruiz is at Chase Bank in his sister's name, Maria Ruiz. The account number is 951197599.
