CHANDLER, Ariz. – A 13-year-old girl escaped an attempted abduction near Ray and Alma School roads in Chandler Tuesday morning.
The teen was walking down Hartford Street just south of Shannon Street at approximately 8 a.m. when a man got out of a vehicle that was parked in an alley and approached her, according to Sgt. Joe Favazzo with the Chandler Police Department.
"He actually grabs her by the hair and tried to get her to go with him," Favazzo said. "She kicks and screams, does exactly what she needs to save herself."
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, approximately 160 pounds with short brown/black hair and a light mustache/goatee. He was wearing a short sleeved black T-shirt, black pants and black work boots.
The suspect was last seen in an older-model brown sedan with tinted windows. Police do not know if it was a two-door or four-door vehicle.
The victim told police that she had never seen the suspect before.
The incident happened near Hartford Sylvia Encinas Elementary School, however, the victim does not attend the school. The principal sent a letter home to parents informing them of the incident.
Parents whose children attend there were on edge after recieving the news Tuesday.
"We walk to school every morning, so it's scary to hear that because we live close to here," Alma Cervantes said.
The Chandler Police Department is working with the Chandler Unified School District on this case.
