State treasurer talks about today's special legislative session and budget crisis

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Legislature meets in special session Thursday for the fourth time this year on the state's budget crisis.

The only remaining item to be considered for action is a package of spending cuts and fund transfers being compiled by majority Republicans.

That's after legislative leaders decided that lawmakers would not act on two ballot measures -- a proposed temporary sales tax increase and a temporary constitutional change to loosen voter-approved spending mandates.

The leaders say there was a mistake about how long it takes to get a referral on a special election ballot and there isn't enough support in the House to advance Gov. Jan Brewer's proposal for a one-cent, three-year sales tax increase.
