TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Arizona campus has been cleared after police spent much of Friday night investigating reports of a man with a rifle.
Police went floor-by-floor searching the Administration Building after a 9-1-1 call came in to the University of Arizona Police Department just before 5 p.m.
A short time later a text alert was sent to students advising them of the situation.
The Administration Building and some surrounding buildings near the campus's central mall were evacuated during the search.
Student Rachel McCluskey told 3TV her sister was in the Student Union at the time, one of the buildings evacuated during the search.
"I was afraid," McCluskey said. "I called my parents right after that...my sister was right there."
Students said they appreciated the fast police response. Tucson police assisted UAPD, along with a regional bomb squad.
"It was all really fast," said student Katherine Hawley. "Within 30 minutes, 50 cars lined up; there were police running around."
"I would rather be safe than sorry," said McCluskey. "I don't have a problem with all the added police."
Streets leading to the Administration Building were blocked, and dozens of police officers - some wearing helmets and armored vests and others armed with assault weapons - were seen on campus with a helicopter hovering overhead.
No injuries, arrests or evidence were reported during the search.
Campus police say they're still investigating the incident. A spokesman said the initial 911 call came from a third party, but police would not comment further on specifics.
