MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police have released the name of a man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning.

He has been identified as Chris Allan Chipman, 49. Police said he had a history of theft and drug-related offenses.

Police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato said three officers stopped Chipman and questioned him in the area of Williams and Main Street at about 9:30 a.m. He was in a wheelchair at the time.

Chipman had a felony warrant for drugs.

The officers noticed Chipman fidgeting with his waistband and found two concealed knives. He also had a small handgun in his possession, according to Landato.

Chipman was shot by an officer during a struggle for the gun and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Landato said the gun that Chipman had was loaded and reported stolen.

Chipman's criminal history includes prior convictions of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, theft and disorderly conduct. He had charges of possession of narcotics, drug paraphernalia and child endangerment pending.

Landato said Chipman had other knives in backpacks in his possession. Police also located drug paraphernalia and a white substance believed to be illicit drugs. Landato said Chipman had a history of heroin use.
