GILBERT -- Police have released the identities of the drivers killed in a five-vehicle crash near Greenfield Road and Claxton Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Christopher Oberg, 20, drove a Chevrolet Cavalier at a high rate of speed southbound on Greenfield Road and collided with cars stopped for the traffic signal at East Germann Road.

According to Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino, Oberg's car hit a Ford Taurus driven by Leigh Ann Tonkinson, 35, starting a chain reaction of collisions. Tonkinson's car overturned and was leaking gasoline.

Oberg's car crossed the centerline after impact with the Taurus and was hit broadside by a Ford Focus driven by Zachary Dean, 21, of Queen Creek. Gilbert resident Camry Buttars, 23, a passenger in the Focus, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Nissan Sentra and a BMW were damaged in the chain reaction.

Oberg and Tonkinson were pronounced dead at the scene. Five people involved in the crash declined medical transport.

Police do not know if drugs or alcohol were involved. The presence of drugs or alcohol will be determined by a medical examiner.
