MESA -- The Mesa Police Department was called out to the scene of a reported domestic-violence situation at a a complex of townhouses at McDowell and Recker roads Thursday morning.

SWAT, K-9 units and police officers were called out shortly after 7 a.m.

Police said Craig Vanderbeck, 47-year-old man was refusing to come out of one of the units, and a 27-year-old woman was taken to the hospital. She reportedly suffered serious cuts and lacerations, and was listed in critical condition.

Vanderbeck, who appeared to be covered in blood, reportedly surrendered after some negotiation with police. He was taken into custody shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Neighbors said Vanderbeck had been living with the woman for about two months and there was a troubled history between the two of them. 3TV has learned that Vanderbeck and the victim not married.

One neighbor said the woman called police from her home recently, and police confirm that Vanderbeck has been arrested for domestic violence before.

The victim, whose name has not been released, underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

Police said Vanderbeck suffered some self-inflicted injuries to his arms and neck, and had to be treated at the hospital. Once doctors released him, Vanderbeck was booked on one count of Attempted Second-degree Murder.
