PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are awaiting a Maricopa County medical examiner's report in the fatal shooting of a police sergeant Monday night.
Sgt. Sean Drenth was found with a fatal gunshot wound near 17th Avenue and Jackson Street in downtown Phoenix late Monday night.
Drenth's body was discovered by an Arizona Capitol Police unit just before 11 p.m. after concern over him not responding to radio calls.
Sources tell 3TV Sgt. Drenth was killed with his own shotgun, which was found on top of his body. Another one of the officer’s guns was found several feet away.
While police are investigating Drenth's death as a homicide, they have not released any details, including information about the crime scene or the weapons.
Drenth had not been heard from for about an hour before his body was discovered on the ground near the passenger side of his police car in an alley between an ADOT parking lot and the railroad tracks.
Drenth, 35, is a 12-year veteran of the force. He is survived by his wife of 13 years and his mother.
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon canceled an event Tuesday morning and released this statement, "My heart and my prayers are with our fallen police sergeant, his family and our Police Department. Rest assured, the City of Phoenix will commit every resource necessary and do everything in our power to find the killer or killers, capture them and bring them to justice."
Gov. Jan Brewer had a moment of silence at a morning press conference announcing jobs in the Phoenix-metro area.
Investigators say Sgt. Drenth did not send out a distress call and it is unknown what he was doing at the industrial location.
Phoenix police hope surveillance video from nearby businesses will help in piecing together the details of the shooting. At this point, they have not released any more details.
Funeral services for Drenth will be Monday, October 25 at 10 a.m. at the Christ's Church of the Valley in Peoria. The services are open to the public.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, PO Box 996, West Yellowstone, MT 59758 or AZ Humane Society, 1521 W Dobbins Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85041
