PHOENIX – A woman is in custody and two men are sought after shots were fired at two Phoenix police officers early Friday morning.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the officers saw a suspicious vehicle with three people inside at a motel around 1:30 a.m. and stopped it near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road. The front-seat passenger jumped out of the car and ran eastbound.
Thompson said a man in the back seat put on a mask, like the one from the movie "V for Vendetta," got out of the vehicle and fired several shots at the officers.
"We just don't know, but it's certainly an unusual situation to have an individual wearing a mask and a long haired wig," said Sgt. Thompson
He said the officers were not in a position to return fire.
Randy Shamoon said he was resting in his truck when it started shaking.
"I opened the window then I saw somebody grab this bar running with long hair and then he jumped over that fence right there," said Shamoon. He said that man then turned and shot at police. "When you hear shots, and you’re in the middle of it is bad," said Shamoon.
Both suspects jumped over a block wall and ran into a residential area. They have not been located.
“I don't know how he could jump that high, but he jumped and they couldn't catch him," said Shamoon.
Police searched the neighborhood.
"They were in front of my house, came in, opened the back gate, went in the back,” said Rosario Medina.
"I saw a lot of policemen here and the helicopter," said Patricia Reyes.
"They were going into all the neighborhoods to all of the houses checking everything out," said Mike Mejia.
Police didn't find the two men, but they did find the mask, wig and jacket worn by the back-seat passenger, near the wall.
Neither officer was injured.
The 26-year-old woman driving the vehicle was taken into custody at the location of the stop. She told police that she was in the area of the motel to collect some money when the two men volunteered to help her. She said she didn't know them.
The woman was turned over to Mesa police officers for a misdemeanor arrest warrant.
The suspect who fired shots at the officers is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 to 200 pounds, wearing a clear "V for Vendetta"-style mask, a long black wig and a black jacket.
The other suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, 230 pounds, wearing a tan ball cap, a white jersey with black numbers, a black jacket, khaki pants and white shoes.
