PHOENIX -- A 50-year-old Phoenix man is accused of fatally stabbing his roommate Sunday afternoon.

Police said Roberto Guillen Garcia stabbed his 56-year-old roommate around noon at their group home near Roosevelt and 29th streets.

Garcia told the manager of the facility that his roommate came at him with a butcher knife. Garcia said he took the knife away and stabbed the man.

The victim had several stab wounds to his chest area and died at the scene.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said Garcia would not speak to investigators and became combative with the officers. He also tried to escape after being taken into custody.

According to the police report, Garcia told the officers he was hearing voices.

Garcia was booked into the Maricopa County Jail and charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of second-degree escape and two counts of resisting arrest.

His bond was set at $1 million.

The victim's name was not released.
