March of Dimes celebrates 75 years of helping babies

PHOENIX -- This weekend is the March of Dimes' annual March for Babies in metro Phoenix.

The event used to be called the "Mother's March," but dads soon wanted to get involved so the name changed. That's appropriate when you consider the Mother's March was actually started by a dad.

Charley Hoover was the advertising director at the Arizona Republic and Gazette. The March of Dimes, which at the time was called the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, asked if he could figure out a way for the organization to make some money. They were trying to help fund polio research. Hoover's son had polio.. Hoover said he'd think about it.

When he went home that night, his 7-year-old son, Tom, was having a hard time getting to sleep. Tom Hoover said dad peeked in his room to see how he was. Tom was restless and upset so his dad flipped on the light to see if he could help. Tom said you could almost see the idea for the Mother's March pop into his dad's head just as the light came on.

Hoover's idea was to have a door-to-door collection for only one hour on only one evening, visiting only the homes that turned on their porch lights.

Many mothers took up the collection in 1951, going door-to-door in Phoenix.

That first year they raised nearly $50,000. When the organization took it to a national level, millions were made and the Mother's March started.

Today, March for Babies is the largest annual fundraising event for the March of Dimes.

The 2013 Phoenix March for Babies is Saturday, April 13. The moms of 3TV along with 2013 March for Babies chairman, President and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks Derrick Hall, celebrate 75 years of this amazing event.

“My work with the March of Dimes is a real honor – especially during the Foundation’s milestone 75th anniversary year. March for Babies gives everyone in our community the chance to work together for stronger, healthier babies and make a difference in the lives of millions of babies,” said Hall. “I can’t think of a more important cause than healthy babies.”
