PHOENIX -- A new Walmart is opening in the Sunnyslope area, and that means jobs coming to the neighborhood. The store will be looking to hire close to 100 people to staff the new store. Both full- and part-time positions will be available.
The Neighborhood Market store is set to open this June at 115 E. Dunlap Ave. in a former Food City store. Walmart has opened a temporary hiring center in the same shopping plaza at 17 E. Dunlap Ave., Suite 1.
The Walmart Neighborhood Market stores are usually about 38,000 square feet and employ no more than 100 people, while typical Walmart stores are about 106,000 square feet and employ about 200 people. The Walmart Supercenters are about 182,000 square feet and employ about 300 people.
Folks looking for jobs can apply online or come in person and fill out the application. Some interviews will be done on the spot.
Many Sunnyslope residents are looking forward to the opportunity Walmart presents.
"I was a greeter at another store before I was laid off," said Barbara Sanders, who is anxious to land part- or full-time employment. "It would save my house for one thing, and help pay the other bills I've got."
Store manager Thomas Arthur said he is looking to staff the entire store.
"The possibilities are endless for hourly associates to move up," he said. "Seventy percent of all Walmart management comes form an hourly position."
Lori Unsell just lives down the street.
"I thought I better get down there because I've been waiting for something to go into the old Food City store," she said.
Again, you can apply for jobs online or go to the hiring center near Dunlap and Central avenues, starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and apply in person.
