PHOENIX – A mother has died after she and two of her eight children were hit by a pickup truck in Phoenix Sunday evening.

According to Phoenix police, Ahlam Awad, 41, and her two children, ages 3 and 8, were jaywalking across Northern Avenue near 13th Street when the truck hit them around 7 p.m. The mother died at the scene.

The 3-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital. The 8-year-old sustained only minor injuries and is recovering at home.

Witnesses told 3TV a female driver was turning west onto Northern into the setting sun and likely didn't even see the family crossing the street.

“When I looked up I saw the father running toward them and when I got over there ... I knew [the mother] was DOA,” said Laroy Low, who said he ran to help after seeing the accident. “… I knew [the little boy] had bad trauma to the head so I tried to keep him down. Me and this other person were holding him down, trying to keep him calm until the police showed up.”

Detectives determined the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

A neighbor said the family recently moved to Phoenix from Syria.
